Ohio Lt. Gov. Jon Husted was officially sworn into the United States Senate on Tuesday.The swearing in marked the beginning of his tenure as United States Senator.Husted was appointed by Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine to fill the Ohio U.S. Senate seat that was vacated by Vice President JD Vance.DeWine made the announcement from the Statehouse Friday. They both revealed Husted learned of the decision the day prior. It’s cool to have a vice president from Ohio that’s my friend,” Husted said.The longtime politician was first elected to office in Ohio in 2000, when he won election to serve in the state’s House of Representatives.Husted served in that capacity from 2001-09, before he began representing the Sixth District of the Ohio Senate.During his time with the Ohio House of Representatives, Husted served as the Speaker of the House, becoming one of the youngest people to do so in state history.In 2010, Husted was elected as Ohio Secretary of State and reelected to the position in 2014.Husted ran as a candidate in the Republican primary for Governor of Ohio in 2018, but ultimately withdrew from the race before running as DeWine’s lieutenant governor.Among the issues that Husted took on as lieutenant governor in Ohio is social media access for younger children.Husted pushed for a law that limits access to social media for young people, with the goal of focusing on mental health wellness for the next generation.Husted is a husband to wife Tina, and father to three, Alex, Katie and Kylie.
