Part of a ring-road is set to stay closed for six more days as engineers carry out urgent repairs following a gas leak.

Workers from SGN shut the westbound stretch of Elwick Road in Ashford yesterday.

It is closed from the traffic light-controlled crossing outside Country Square to The Bolt roundabout near West Street.

Drivers coming from the other direction can still get through.

SGN says it is not clear how long it will take to repair the leak, but Kent Highways says it could stay closed until Wednesday, January 29.

Dan Brown, a spokesman for gas company SGN, said: “We’re carrying out urgent gas network repairs in Elwick Road after a leak was discovered.

“Our engineers have completed a repair to the affected pipe but we’re working to identify the source of another leak near to Elwick Road’s junction with Godinton Road.

“For everyone’s safety, we’ve needed to close the road in one direction from Godinton Road to Elwick Road.

“It’s too early to say how long this repair work might take to complete.”

A diversion route is in place via the A2042 Station Road, Wellesley Road, A292 Somerset Road, Forge Lane, New Street, West Street and Godinton Road.

The closure has been causing delays for drivers with many spotted turning around at the closure sign.

Engineers from SGN have been carrying out gas repairs in Elwick Road since before the Christmas period, with temporary traffic lights causing drivers headaches.
