Jan. 27 (UPI) — A car was driven into a crowd gathered in a Philadelphia neighborhood, injuring three, as fans celebrated the Philadelphia Eagles’ win over the Washington Commanders in the NFC Championship game, police said.

The incident occurred about 9:30 p.m. EST Sunday night at Broad and Spring Garden streets near Center City, a historical arts and entertainment hub.

The Philadelphia Police Department said on X that the driver of the vehicle was taken into custody, and that the incident “does not appear to be intentional at this time.” Police told NBC 10 Philadelphia that the three people sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were in stable condition.

Several media outlets provided footage of the scene, which showed a Mercedes-Benz sedan driving through a crowd gathered in the street. Additional footage showed emergency personnel assisting the injured with a stretcher, wheelchair and ambulances. Others were given bandages and braces.

Thousands gathered throughout Philadelphia on Sunday night to celebrate the Eagles’ victory, which secured a trip to Super Bowl LIX. They will meet the Kansas City Chiefs in the title game Feb. 9 in New Orleans.

Sunday’s incident in Philadelphia occurred less than four weeks after 15 people were killed and dozens more were injured when a man drove a pickup truck through a crowd on Bourbon Street in New Orleans on Jan 1.

The NFL and federal law enforcement agencies later announced that they increased security measures for Super Bowl LIX in light of the Jan. 1 incident.
