AKRON, Ohio (WJW) – Akron Public Schools has confirmed one of its schools was placed under a “brief precautionary lockdown” due to U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement agents who were operating nearby.
It happened Tuesday at Forest Hills Community Learning Center along Damon Street, according to a statement from the district.
“This proactive measure aimed to ensure the safety and security of all students and staff,” the statement reads. “During the lockdown, internal doors were secured while normal classroom instruction continued with minimal disruption. The lockdown was lifted shortly after administrators confirmed no immediate threat to the school.”
Under district policy, access to schools is restricted “to protect the educational environment,” and school staff are expected to prioritize “student safety, privacy and well-being” when interacting with law enforcement, reads the statement.
The district expects to “continuously review and update” its immigration policies to adhere to federal and state directives.
“We are committed to designing safe, affirming and inclusive environments where all members of our community are respected and supported,” district spokesperson Stacey Hodoh is quoted in the release. “These procedures ensure we can continue to prioritize student well-being during challenging times.”
Immigrations enforcement activity is ramping up across the country, as directed by President Donald Trump’s administration. Trump has pledged to deport 11 million people believed to be in the country illegally, FOX 8 News previously reported.
The Geauga County Jail on Monday housed 56 ICE detainees, 20 of whom came in on Sunday night, Sheriff Scott Hildenbrand has confirmed to FOX 8 News.
