An award-winning shop has confirmed it will leave one of Kent’s busiest high streets to focus on its flagship and online stores.
Moo Like A Monkey, a family-run children’s shop, is set to close its Canterbury outlet less than two years after opening in Palace Street.
Moving into the city in July 2023, owners Charlotte and Naveed Khan admitted the move was an “experiment” but will now fully turn their attention to Moo’s original shopfront in The Old High Street, Folkestone as well as its online offering.
Charlotte told KentOnline: “We’re coming to the end of our lease in Canterbury. It was always intended as a two-year experiment, and we’ve made the decision not to renew so we can focus on our Folkestone shop and online store.
“We’ve absolutely loved having a shop in Canterbury. This isn’t the end—just a new chapter for us!
“Our MooCycle buy-back scheme was particularly successful in Canterbury, and I’m pleased to confirm it will continue at our Folkestone shop.”
MooCycle allows customers to bring in pre-owned books and clothes in exchange for store credit, which forms part of its plans to create a fully circular buying experience.
Charlotte launched the business in 2018 when her youngest child was just one, winning Mumpreneur of the Year at the Kent Women in Business awards that same year.
In 2022, the shop achieved runner-up in the High Street Shop category of the Holly Tucker National Independent Awards.
The Palace Street property has now appeared back on the rental market with an asking price of £2,000 a month, with estate agent Miles and Barr saying it is readily available for a new tenant to move in.
The city continues to do well despite growing pressures on retailers and online competition.
In particular, Canterbury has a strong independent business base while more than a third of firms within the city walls are traditional retail units.
