Attorney General Alan Wilson said, “Any efforts to obstruct or interfere with law enforcement will have serious consequences” in response to a planned meeting of the South Carolina Democratic Socialists of America.

The group is said to be forming a “mass resistance” to ICE deportations and plans to create a “Community ICE Raid Response Network.”

In a letter to the organizationTuesday, Wilson said “While every South Carolinian has the constitutional right to peacefully assemble and express their view… The Attorney General’s Office remains steadfast in its dedication to working with President Donald Trump and enforcing federal immigration laws without interference or obstruction.”

The release also cited past instances of violent protests as the reason for his warnings.

“Recent events serve as a reminder of the dangers associated with unlawful resistance. Just last week, during an anti-deportation protest in Greenville, a demonstrator crashed a vehicle into a crowd, injuring two people,” the letter said.

Wilson urged all members of the South Carolina Democratic Socialists of America to act in accordance with the law as they move forward.

“Let it be clear: any individual who engages in illegal activities, whether by obstructing law enforcement, interfering with investigations, or attempting to disrupt lawful immigration enforcement efforts, will face prosecution to the fullest extent of the law,” Wilson said.
