Aaron Watkins

Aaron Watkins is the head coach for both the men’s and women’s golf teams at the University of the Cumberlands. In his sixth year coaching at the university, the Harlan native says that he is optimistic about the upcoming spring 2025 season.

Watkins said recently that he expects another strong showing from the women’s team, which finished among the top ten in the country one year ago. Despite losing some key senior players, he said that the team currently features a lot of capable young talent.

On the men’s side, Watkins said that he is hoping to build on some of the positive developments from the fall season and be a serious contender in the Mid-South Conference.

Watkins also added that he is excited about some of the new recruits that will be making their way onto campus for both squads later this year.

The Patriot golf teams still have a month before their first competition of the spring season. In the meantime, players will continue to practice in preparation for what Watkins expects to be another extremely competitive campaign in the MSC.

When asked what he looks for in a college competitor, Watkins said that he likes to see a consistency in play, as well as an understanding that work in the classroom has to be taken care of in order to remain eligible. As he put it, “You have to take care of the ‘have to’s’ before you get to do the ‘want to’s’.”

Watkins said that he feels the future is bright for the sport of golf in Kentucky. When it comes to the amount of opportunities out there for student-athletes to compete at the college level, he assured that the scholarship money is out there for those who are talented enough and work hard enough to get it. When it comes to playing at the collegiate level, he advised players to not limit themselves to just one or two potential schools, but to consider all possible avenues for how that goal might be achieved.

Legacy Golf Cars experiences amazing growth in first year of business

If you have been reading Par for the Course since it started last month, you have no doubt recognized the advertisements for Legacy Golf Cars in London. General Manager Bobby Kidd and his crew celebrated one year in business back in November, and just after the New Year they found out that they are the top dealership in their region, which includes three other states.

Kidd, who golfed at Laurel County High School and later at the former Cumberland College, said that his past experience in the sport allows him to have a frame of reference when it comes to some of the specific needs that customers might have on the golf course. It might surprise readers to know, however, that the majority of vehicles sold at Legacy actually get utilized in other ways.

“They are being used on farms, campgrounds, and in neighborhoods,” said Kidd, who added various commercial applications is another constantly growing area of businesses.

Legacy is a Club Car and Yamaha dealer employing certified technicians who can also handle maintenance and repairs on E-Z-Go vehicles as well. To find out more about what has made them a regional leader in sales and service, visit them online at www.drivelegacygolf.com.

Rep. Nick Wilson proposes the ‘Kentucky Fairways Act’

82nd District Rep. Nick Wilson introduced a bill recently, House Bill 293, that aims to “establish a 15 percent discount at state park lodging resorts and golf courses for Kentucky residents.”

Wilson has dubbed the bill the J.E. Jones Kentucky Fairways Act in honor of the late J.E. Jones, a longtime member of the Whitley County Public Schools Board of Education who was also an avid golfer in his free time.

HB 293, which has been sent for review by the House Tourism and Outdoor Recreation Committee, can be viewed in its entirety at www.legislature.ky.gov.
