The 55-year-old, who has run the shop for 19 years, said: “You hear about stabbings all the time so it is no longer a shock.

“It feels dangerous as anyone can get their hands on a knife. Even for me, I am here in my shop with no body armour on.

Meanwhile, Philip Harpum, 75, says the incident makes him more “certain” he will not venture out of his home after dark.

The Rectory Road resident, who has lived there for 20 years, said: “It is scary stuff and I’m definitely not going to go out at night time, not if it’s dark.

“The first I saw of it was when I had to go out this morning in my car, there were police here and there was a cordon.

“But I had no idea what happened.”
