BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) – A local car dealership helped in the fight against breast cancer on Wednesday.
#1 Cochran Buick GMC’s “Let’s Put Brakes on Breast Cancer” campaign made a major donation to Mercy Health’s Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center in Boardman. The check for $26,330 was presented to support advanced breast cancer care in the Mahoning Valley.
In attendance was Dr. Rashid Abdu who fulfilled a promise to his wife, Joanie, that no woman in the Mahoning Valley facing the disease would ever be without specialized care.
Joanie died of breast cancer in 1994.
“You know, when I was standing looking at everybody, I said if I could find just one word, one word–love,” said Dr. Abdu. “The center was started because I loved Joanie. And the reason it is there is because I, and you, all love the community.”
“It is the inspiration of Dr. Abdu, who formed this concept of having in our community one of the best and most comprehensive breast care centers anywhere,” said Paul Homick, who serves as president of the Mercy Health Foundation of the Mahoning Valley. “And we’re very, very proud to have that. It’s because of the generosity of the community that we have the highest level of care available anywhere. The Joanie’s Promise Fund ensures that anybody who needs the services of the Joani Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center can receive that care regardless of their ability to pay.”
Before the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center was established, the Mahoning Valley had one of the highest mortality rates from breast cancer in Ohio and in the nation.
