Nico Hoerner records career first as Cubs fall to Phillies 9-6

PHILADELPHIA — The Cubs might be eliminated from playoff contention, but that doesn’t render their final games of the season useless.

“No matter where you’re at in your career, hopefully you’re able to keep a growth mindset on continuing to learn,” second baseman Nico Hoerner said after the Cubs’ 9-6 loss to the Phillies. “And even if that’s not changing anything you’re doing, just how consistent can you be over and over and over and not let circumstances or surroundings change the way you prepare or play, I think, is good. We’re always picking up little tidbits playing. And you never know when things might click and create something that’s really meaningful and lasting.”

Even as the Cubs dropped the final game of the series to the Phillies, and starter Javier Assad struggled to the tune of eight runs in 4⅓ innings, Hoerner had a standout game.

He recorded the first two-homer game of his career and made three highlight-worthy plays on defense: a diving stop in the second inning, a leaping catch in the fourth and an impressive tag in the sixth to prevent Bryce Harper from stretching a single into a double to end the inning.

“I think that it’s an easy time of year to get focused on wanting to finish with this or that, or whatever stat’s on your mind,” Hoerner said. “And I think that’s a bit of a trap we all fall into at times. But just continuing to learn and getting to play major-league baseball. It’s a special thing, and we don’t get to do it for that long.”

Injury update

Before the Cubs put out their lineup Wednesday, manager Craig Counsell said that Michael Busch, who left the game Tuesday with bruised right triceps, and Seiya Suzuki, who exited with a sprained right ankle, were “questionable” for the game.

Neither played Wednesday. And though Suzuki’s injury was a factor in the team recalling Kevin Alcántara, who debuted on Wednesday, they did not put Suzuki on the IL as the corresponding move. That keeps open the possibility that he plays in the Cubs’ final series of the season this weekend.

Rotation questions

The Cubs have not yet decided whether Shota Imanaga will make one more start this season, Counsell said.

Against the Reds this weekend, Jameson Taillon is scheduled to start Friday and Kyle Hendricks on Saturday. The probable starter for Sunday is listed as “TBD.”

In his rookie season, Imanaga has made 29 starts, thrown 173⅓ innings and posted a 2.91 ERA.

AFL roster

Major League Baseball announced rosters for the Arizona Fall League. Cubs catching prospect Moises Ballesteros (No. 41) was one of 14 MLB Pipeline Top 100 prospects included. Infielder Ben Cowles, whom the Cubs acquired from the Yankees at the trade deadline, is also set to play for the Mesa Solar Sox this fall.

In all, the Cubs are set to send eight minor-leaguers to the AFL. Infielder Jonathon Long and pitchers Grant Kipp, Shane Marshall, Aaron Perry, Vince Reilly and Luis Rujano round out the list.

Guardians White Sox Baseball

Boyd made eight starts for the Guardians last season.
