BILLINGS, Mont. – In an effort to support their community, multiple Boy Scout troops with Scouting American in Billings teamed up with Family Service to sort and stock food donations for those in need.
Kara Burpee, a volunteer from Lockwood Troop 42, shared insights about the event’s significance. “It allows them to be aware of things in their community and the services that we provide, but it also provides community service hours for them, and some of them need it for advancement and this is a chance for them to see that the community has this need and that there are groups out there that do this,” she said.
This event marks the second year the scouts have collaborated with Family Service, although the Food Scouting initiative has been ongoing for 10 years. The partnership is seen as a valuable opportunity to educate young scouts about community needs.
Members of Troop 10, Everett Hornund and Ike Knudsen, expressed how the experience has impacted their perspective. “I do but I should feel more sad for other people because they don’t have a warm house, or know that they could have a warm dinner, lunch, or breakfast,” said Hornund. Knudsen added, “And it makes you thankful for all the food you get because there are some people who don’t get a lot of food…doing this just really helps those in the community and it makes you a better person overall.”
Last year, the troops helped sort and stock over 2,000 pounds of food donations. Family Service hopes to match or exceed that amount this year to continue assisting those in need.
