Broadstairs woman writes song on women’s safety after attack in Birmingham

A Kent RnB singer who suffered an unprovoked attack while walking home from university has written a song about women’s safety.

Daisy Foster, from Broadstairs, was with friends when they passed a group of men outside a bar.

One reportedly “stormed over” to grab one girl and, while rushing to her defence, Ms Foster was assaulted.

She had to be hospitalised for her injuries, but no suspect has been identified in the case to date following the attack in Birmingham in October 2023.

The 21-year-old has now released a song titled SWaN, about safety for women, especially while walking home at night.

She said: “Police searched the area. Nothing ever got found and I never heard anything back from them really.

“That was the end of it.

“It was very frustrating to not ever be able to find these people and I do feel the police could have done more.”

She says she visited the bar where it happened a week after the event and asked if police had come in for the CCTV.

“They said they hadn’t heard from them,” Ms Foster added.

“There kind of wasn’t any closure and we know these people are still out there.

“It was completely unprovoked so it’s likely to happen again. You don’t know how many more victims there could be.”

The song’s title stands for Safety for Women At Night and includes lyrics such as: “We know it’s not all men, but one’s enough.”

Proceeds from any sales will go towards Nia, a London-based charity which supports women subjected to sexual and domestic violence and abuse.

The medical administrator and aspiring actress added: “The message we want to send is one politically and socially.

“I feel like the government needs to step up and take this issue more seriously.

“But also, women support women throughout these issues, but men do not support women so much.

“If we can have an alliance with men and they call out bad behaviour or intervene in situations like this, that will significantly help the problem.”

SWaN was co-written by Miss Foster’s friends Sinade Gilbert and Jamie Mcgregor

It is available to stream here.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: “A woman was pushed to the floor and punched on Allison Street at its junction with Bordesley Street, Birmingham, shortly after 7.50pm on October 25, 2023.

“We have investigated and at this stage have been unable to identify the suspect.

“However, we would appeal for witnesses or anyone with fresh information to please contact us via Live Chat on our website or by calling 101 quoting crime reference number 20/934661/23.

“Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) and making the West Midlands a safer place for women and girls is our priority.

“Whether it is by disrupting predatory behaviour during the night-time economy and implementing safer walking routes, supporting victims of domestic abuse and changing perpetrator behaviour or by working to eliminate sexism and misogyny from the workplace.”
