SPOKANE, Wash. — Family and friends are grieving the man who was killed by a suspected impaired driver on Friday.

On February 14, 26-year-old Nigel Sherman pulled over on I-90 near the Spokane Valley Mall to help another driver who had wrecked and pulled off the road.

According to Washington State Patrol, an oncoming car hit Sherman’s car, causing it to crash into him. He died from his injuries.

WSP said it believes the driver who caused the crash was under the influence, but as of Monday afternoon, they are still waiting on blood test results.

The driver has yet to face any criminal charges and is recovering in the hospital.

Friends of Nigel said the loss is ‘heartbreaking’, especially knowing he was just trying to help someone.

“He was really trying to be himself and help someone, and unfortunately, a terrible series of events happened and he lost his life,” said Chris Corbin, Nigel’s friend and coworker.

Corbin worked with Nigel as part of a three-person crew at a local restaurant. He said they became close quickly.

“I’ve spent a lot of time just kind of staring off and thinking about the kid,” he said.

Corbin said he will be missed deeply.

“I’ve spent the last two days thinking about him a lot, and about his situation, his family, and I think I’m ready to stop being sad, we need to celebrate this kid,” he said.
