Robert Bolt’s award-winning play has been revived many times since its debut in 1960, with the latest tour visiting theatres all over the UK, including five nights in Canterbury.

The play is set in the Tudor court of King Henry VIII and follows Sir Thomas More as he wrestles with his conscience, loyalty and power amidst the upheaval of the king’s personal life.

When the monarch demands a divorce from his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, so he can marry Anne Boleyn, Thomas, a staunch Catholic and respected figure, refuses to acknowledge the annulment and fights back against Henry’s leadership.

He is convicted of treason and executed by the king, but his legacy has helped shape the history of English royalty and religion.

The play was adapted into a multi-Academy Award-winning film in 1966 starring Paul Scofield, Orson Welles and Vanessa Redgrave.

This latest production stars Martin Shaw, who has appeared in TV shows such as Judge John Deed and The Professionals, in the lead role.

Martin is no stranger to the stage, having made a name for himself in notable works including the West End productions of Hobson’s Choice and 12 Angry Men.

He will be joined on stage by Gary Wilmot, the TV presenter and actor best known for appearing on talent show New Faces in the 1970s and his numerous theatre roles including Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the Prince of Egypt and Wicked.

A Man for All Seasons will be at the Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury from Tuesday, March 4 to Saturday, March 8. You can book your tickets online here.
