SALINEVILLE, Ohio (WKBN) — Southern Local senior Kennedy Lewis is no stranger to time management as a five-sport athlete with 16 varsity letters.
Lewis is involved with the volleyball, golf, bowling, basketball and softball teams at Southern.
On the volleyball team, she has four varsity letters and has started for two seasons. Lewis received All-District honors as a team captain. She also helped advance the Southern team to the district semifinals.
The Southern standout’s most decorated sport is on the golf team, where she has four varsity letters. As a four-year captain, Lewis holds four school records.
“Helped me think, OK, I’m here for a reason. I can do this, they believe in me,” Lewis said.
Lewis holds the school records for the most birdies in a round and career. Also, the lowest 9-hole and 18-hole scores in school history. She was Southern’s second-ever District qualifier in girls golf.
On the basketball team, she owns two varsity letters and started for two seasons. She helped the Southern team advance to the district semifinals and win sectionals.
Lewis is a decorated bowler with two varsity letters and has the school record for career strikes with 61.
The Southern star has four varsity letters on the softball team where she has been named a captain for four seasons. She owns the school record for career batting average with a .540.
Lewis helped the softball team win sectionals and advance to the district finals.
In the classroom, Lewis is equally as talented with a 4.54 GPA. She has taken 64 college credits throughout high school at Kent State University and Eastern Gateway Community College.
She is at the top of her class and is on track to be Southern’s Valedictorian.
“Sports record always go away, your name will be up there, but they’re meant to be broken,” Lewis said. “At our school, we have a valedictorian and salutatorian board that your name gets engraved on. My goal was always have it on the valedictorian side because that never goes away.”
Outside of sports, Lewis is involved in Spanish Club, Yearbook, Blue Crew, student council, and national honors society. She is the senior class and NHS president and the Student Council vice president.
Lewis gives back to her community through her church helping teach bible school with little kids. She also helps her mother, who is a kindergarten teacher, with the kids for four to five hours every day.
“They’re always happy to see you seeing them in the beginning not know how to write their name and then at the end they’re writing their name,” said Lewis. “Just a little exciting to see the growth.”
Lewis said she can envision herself walking across the graduation stage knowing she gave it her all at Southern.
“I finally did it, I wanted to accomplish that lifelong goal and I finally did it so it’ll be very satisfying,” Lewis said.
Upon graduation, she plans to attend Youngstown State University for civil engineering.
