When Heather Sharpe got tickets to a Drake concert in Perth, Australia this week, she had no idea she’d be getting her money back — and a whole lot more.
Sharpe, originally from Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s, went to the Toronto rapper’s concert in Perth on Wednesday, and proudly showcased a Canadian flag from her seat near the stage.
“Every time he walked by I was taking the flag. And I kept waving the flag saying, you know, ‘Canadian! Canadian!’ And I looked at my partner and I was like ‘he hasn’t seen it yet,” Sharpe told CBC News from Scarborough, a suburb of Perth.
Moments later, Drake noticed the flag. He spoke to the crowd about how thankful he was to have people from around the world come to his concerts, but then started speaking to Sharpe directly.
Sharpe said she was thrilled and surprised when Drake acknowledged Newfoundland and Labrador, but wasn’t prepared for what he would say next.
Most people would have to spend big bucks to see rap superstar Drake perform in Australia. But on Wednesday night, one lucky Newfoundlander was promised $20,000 by Drake himself. And it’s all because she brought a piece of home to the show.
“I did see these two people here that got a flag from back home…They’re from Newfoundland. Y’all probably don’t know where that is, but that’s back home,” Drake told the crowd.

“I’m going to give you $20,000 each to go wherever you want in the world,” Drake said to Sharpe and another group of people from Perth.
The crowd erupted in shock.
The next day, Sharpe said she was still questioning whether what happened was real.
“When he said about the $20,000, I just couldn’t believe it. I still can’t,” she said. “Im still pretty shocked, actually. I never thought that was going to happen to me.”
On top of the money, the international superstar also put the spotlight on Sharpe during the performance.
She said as of Friday, she’s still waiting for someone from Drake’s team to contact her about the money, she said, but already has some ideas about what she wants to do with it.
Sharpe moved to Australia five years ago, and works in a local mine. She hopes to use the money for a family reunion.
“I’d love to come home and see family, of course, cause I only get home every couple of years,” she said.
“Honestly, I’d love to take my mom and my brother Luke here to visit Australia. They haven’t been yet, so I’d love for them to see this place.”
