KOOTENAI COUNTY, Idaho — Multiple schools in Kootenai County were under alert Tuesday morning while police investigated threats made by an 18-year-old from Rathdrum.
According to the Coeur d’Alene School District, Venture Academy administrators were made aware of the threats around 8:00 a.m. on February 4.
CDA Police said a student came forward and told the School Resource Officer about a ‘friend’ who made detailed threats about carrying out a school shooting with the ‘intent of causing mass casualties.’ A press release from CDA Public Schools described the suspect as a ‘student.’
The suspect also made threats to other local schools, including the University of Idaho.
At around 10:10 a.m., Venture Academy was placed on a safety hold while school administrators and law enforcement looked for the suspect who made the threats. Lakeland School District put its schools under a safety hold around 9:40 a.m. while law enforcement was in the area.
A safety hold means students can move around inside the buildings and attend classes but are not allowed to leave the building.
According to Coeur d’Alene Police, at approximately 10:15 a.m., the suspect was located and detained. He was brought to the police department, where he agreed to be interviewed.
Police said the suspect admitted to making the threats, but denied he would have carried them out.
According to Coeur d’Alene Police, a search warrant was obtained, and detectives are working to collect evidence.
The Coeur d’Alene School District said it is important to report all threats or suspicious activity, even if it seems like a joke. Students who make threats, even if they are not serious threats, could face disciplinary action or be charged with a crime.
Once the suspect was taken into custody, safety holds were lifted for both the Coeur d’Alene and Lakeland School Districts.
