Sharing a picture on social media of the bent needle which caused the injury, a spokesman said: “Never dispose of needles or other medical sharps in your normal bin.

“One of our household waste crew is being treated at hospital this morning after the needle shown here injured him while he was emptying a bin.”

The local authority said used needles should be deposited only in a medical sharps box, a service the council offers for free.

It added: “We are giving our crew member all the support possible following this morning’s incident.”

Commenting on the council’s post, one woman said: “Omg awful, as someone that uses needles that’s dreadful.

“The council collect mine when needed as GPs or pharmacies have stopped taking them.”

Another added: “Gosh this is terrible.”

More information about collection services for sharp products can be found here.

The council explains: “We offer a free service to households for disposal of clinical waste.

“If you’re in a nursing home the nursing home should arrange the clinical collections through whoever normally collects their waste.

“Please note that pharmacies in Gravesham do not accept clinical waste.”
