As a relentless string of winter storms continues to target the region, salt shortages are beginning to show up in some areas.It has local road crews keeping a close watch on their salt supplies.“This is a winter that we haven’t seen in a long time,” said Lockland Public Works director Joe Ford. “It’s been very, very troublesome for a lot of us in the public works, with manpower and salt supply issues.”Many road departments are reporting salt usage at a rate they haven’t seen in a decade.American Rock Salt, which is a major supplier of salt on the East Coast, addressed what they call a shortage.“For further context, in 2024 American Rock Salt shipped 1.8 million tons of salt for the entirety of the winter season; this winter through January 2025 alone we have already shipped over 2.1 million tons of salt. In total, we have mined and shipped more salt so far this winter than all of last year,” according to a release.American Rock Salt said they bought a new mine, and new equipment and ramped up production 25 percent to meet the shortages.“It’s definitely been, something we have to manage as far as material goes, like salt,” said Matt Marshall.Marshall is the maintenance operations program manager for Hamilton County Engineers.Hamilton County has a good supply and has sold some of it to smaller operations.Marshall said managing the resources this year will be key. “It’s a balancing act of, like, not wasting, but going out every time. So, yeah, you just have to look at it like, what’s the right call?”
