It’s no secret Maricopa has some horrible drivers, but this one might just take the cake.

Eric W. Lay, 38, had already spent an obscene amount of his life in traffic court by 2 a.m. Tuesday when Maricopa Police Department officers found him hauling a stolen trailer down Bowlin Road.

The Saddleback Farms resident was reportedly driving his gray Toyota Tacoma eastbound near High Lonesome Drive, displaying a California plate on the trailer that officers quickly realized was stolen out of Phoenix.

The police said Lay initiated his own traffic stop, pulling over before any officer activated their lights or ordered him to — within eyeshot of the Maricopa Police Station. The authorities immediately directed Lay to get out of his pickup truck and detained him for possession of stolen property.

The officers who searched Lay found 29 suspected fentanyl pills and two baggies of meth on his person. When asked about the pills, he reportedly said, “They are just blue pills,” and told the officers, “You know what they are.”

Whether he meant fentanyl or Viagra, we may never know.

The tag on Lay’s Tacoma was also revealed to be stolen, and inside the truck, officers reported finding cut copper piping hidden under the passenger seat, and seven chain-link fences tied to the trailer.

“These items were confiscated for further review,” a police document stated. “Charges for these items may come at a later date upon further investigation.”

Lay, who had previously faced 22 similar charges in traffic courts in Maricopa and across the Phoenix metro, was booked into the Pinal County jail on charges of possessing dangerous drugs and narcotics, theft and displaying a bogus license plate.

He faces more than 16½ years in prison on the new charges.
