Houston Chronicle speaks with family of New Orleans terror attack suspect
ALL DAY. AUBREY, WHAT’S THE LATEST? HEY, GINA. SO I JUST SPOKE WITH JOHN WAYNE FERGUSON. HE IS A REPORTER AT THE HOUSTON CHRONICLE. ONE OF OUR PARTNERS. HE JUST SPOKE WITH THE KILLER’S FAMILY MOMENTS AGO. I SPOKE WITH THAT REPORTER JUST A COUPLE MINUTES AGO. TAKE A LISTEN. THAT THEY DIDN’T SEE THE PERSON THEY KNEW AS THE PERSON WHO COULD COMMIT THIS KIND OF CRIME, ABDUR SAID THAT HIS BROTHER AND HE HAD TALKED ABOUT THE MARRIAGES, HAD TALKED ABOUT THE BUSINESSES, AND THAT WAS PART OF HIS LIFE. BUT HE HAD NEVER BEEN ANGRY ABOUT THOSE THINGS OR A EXPRESS VIOLENT, YOU KNOW, THOUGHTS OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT. WE TALKED A LITTLE ABOUT THEIR FAITH THAT AT LEAST ONE SIDE OF THE FAMILY GREW UP IN THE ISLAMIC FAITH, ABDUR SAID THAT HE DIDN’T, THAT PEOPLE SHOULDN’T ASSOCIATE THEIR FAITH WITH WHAT HIS BROTHER DID. HE SAID HE BELIEVED HIS BROTHER HAD BEEN RADICALIZED IN SOME WAY. WHEN YOU SPOKE WITH THE FAMILY, DID THEY GIVE ANY INFORMATION? WHY NEW ORLEANS, OF ALL PLACES, TO COME, COME TO? NO, I ASKED, I ASKED IF HE’D EVER BEEN TO NEW ORLEANS OR IF THEY KNEW OF ANY CONNECTIONS WITH THAT. AND THE BROTHER SAID, NO, THERE WAS NOTHING. NOTHING HE KNEW OF. DID THEY GIVE ANY INCLINATION AS TO WHY? I KNOW IT’S STILL BEING DETERMINED AND STILL. NO, NOT REALLY, HE SAID. THE FAMILY WAS IN SHOCK THAT THAT THEY’RE STILL SEARCHING FOR ANSWERS TO OTHER THAN THAN KIND OF THEORIZING THAT HIS BROTHER WAS RADICALIZED. DID THE FAMILY HAVE A MESSAGE TO THE VICTIMS? I THINK, AGAIN, THEY WERE CONCERNED, YES. HE SAID, THE FAMILY, THEIR THOUGHTS WERE WITH THE VICTIMS AND THE WITNESSES AND EVERYBODY WHO WAS AFFECTED BY THIS. I THINK THEY’RE, YOU KNOW, THE YOUNGER BROTHER WAS HORRIFIED BY WHAT HAPPENED. EXTREMELY EMOTIONAL ABOUT IT. THE OLDER BROTHER HE CALLED SAMSUD THE MOST SUCCESSFUL PERSON IN HIS FAMILY BECAUSE OF HIS EXPERIENCE IN THE MILITARY AND WITH THE BUSINESSES AND THINGS LIKE THAT. WOW. SO HIS FAMILY MEMBERS CONSIDERED HIM TO BE ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL IN THE FAMILY? YEAH. TO BE IT WAS ADMIRATION. I SAW A YOUNG MAN THAT WANTED TO SHARE SOME THINGS ABOUT HIS BROTHER, BUT ALSO WANTED TO BE EMPATHETIC TOWARDS THE VICTIMS, AND I THINK IT’S JUST A STRUGGLE FROM THE FAMILIES OF VICTIMS. I THINK IT’S A NORMAL STRUGGLE FOR THE FAMILIES OF SUSPECTS TO GO THROUGH, AND I HOPE PEOPLE MIGHT KEEP THAT IN MIND. AND THAT INTERVIEW WAS DONE IN BEAUMONT, TEXAS. WE’RE GOING TO HAV
