BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) — A 17-year-old boy was arrested late Tuesday after reports state he led officers on a dirt bike chase and then hit the officer attempting to arrest him.
Police were dispatched to the area of 5300 Old Oxford Lane shortly before midnight after it was reported loud dirt bikes were riding in the area. When they arrived, police described who they believed to be an adult riding a “mini bike” with no headlights or tail lights.
Officers began pursuit of the bike and its rider on Glenwood Avenue off of Whitehouse Lane, attempting a traffic stop on Glenwood near Cranberry Run Drive. The rider failed to stop, and a pursuit — at speeds ranging from 10-20 mph — continued onto Ridgewood Drive followed by Market Street.
Reports state the rider slowed down on Market Street and an officer called out of his window for the rider to stop because he was under arrest. The rider looked at the officer before continuing down Market Street, the report details.
The pursuit continued onto Cadillac Boulevard, where the rider pulled into the Lube Depot parking lot, and then the sidewalk in front of the Sandwich Factory before continuing southbound.
The officer noted the rider seemed to lose control of the bike, so he exited the patrol car and began to run after the suspect on foot. However, the rider then struck the officer in the legs with the bike and attempted to accelerate and drag him along, reports state.
When the rider attempted to accelerate, reports state the officer struck him several times, causing him to let go of the handles of the bike and be taken to the ground by police.
The suspect was identified as a 17-year-old and transported to the Juvenile Justice Center on charges of assaulting a police officer, obstructing official business, failure to comply and resisting arrest.
The officer hit by the bike received injuries to his thumb and both knees and was taken to St. Elizabeth Boardman for medical evaluation.
