LEAVITTSBURG, Ohio (WKBN) – A Leavittsburg woman is crediting smoke detectors for saving her mother’s life after a devastating house fire earlier this week.
The fire happened in the 300 block of Pangborn Rd. just before 7 a.m. Monday.
Hannah Ramsey’s mother Laurie Groghan lost everything in the fire.
“Just grateful she’s ok,” said Ramsey. “It was way worse than we thought it was.”
Ramsey and her husband live behind Groghan’s home on Pangborn Road. She says they woke up to a phone call from her mom Monday morning telling them about the fire.
“We ran out the door and we looked and we didn’t think it was that bad. And then I ran up to the front door and got her and the dogs and he was trying to put it out, and then all of a sudden, there was thus huge flame of everything,” Ramsey said.
No one was hurt in the fire but it caused serious damage to the back porch and kitchen, plus there’s smoke damage throughout the house.
“The radiant heat from the wood burner, the piping on the wood burner, the flute, is what caused the fire,” said Warren Township Fire Chief Joe Natali.
Ramsey says her mom has to start over — and needs everything from clothes size extra large to blankets, plus things for her dogs.
“She needs really everything. I mean, she has to start from scratch,” she said. “Whatever you can we appreciate, and then if you want to bring it by the house, we’re here multiple times a day to check on everything so if you just want to drop it off, we appreciate it.”
Ramsey is encouraging people to make sure their smoke detectors work since it likely saved her mom’s life.
“If it wasn’t for that, she’d probably be dead and probably maybe us too because it would have caught our house quick and taken us out too,” Ramsey said.
