Yelp’s pick for best sandwich shop in Massachusetts is a-Mae-zing

Yelp's pick for best sandwich shop in Massachusetts is a-Mae-zing

A website is giving a shoutout to the best of the best sandwich shops in every state, and a local favorite on the South Shore made the nationwide list for Massachusetts.

The Bay State’s best is Mae’s Sandwich Shop on Route 139 at 563 Ocean St. in the Ocean Bluff section of Marshfield, according to Yelp, which explained the methodology used for the current list on its website.

“We identified businesses in the ‘Sandwiches’ category with a large concentration of reviews mentioning ‘sandwiches,’ then ranked those spots using a number of factors, including geographic location and the volume and ratings of reviews mentioning the keyword,” Yelp said on the list’s page.

Mae’s has a 4.9-star rating (out of 5 stars) on the site, based on 78 reviews to date.

‘The most important meal of the day’

Sandwiches are not just incidental menu items included out of obligation and tradition at the ocean-facing eatery opened by Sam Kauff and Elizabeth Price in 2019.

“At Mae’s, we believe a sandwich is the most important meal of the day,” the Quincy couple says on the website for the restaurant Price named in her aunt’s honor.

Putting their money where their menu is, Mae’s boasts around 20 different sandiwch choices, as well as Sunday-only meatball subs.

While the menu at Mae’s includes traditional staples with straightforward names such as turkey and Swiss, many of the other offerings, such as the Lazy Susan, stand-out as much for their names as ingredients.

Named after both Price and Kauff’s mothers, who they were quick to note in a 2019 Patriot Ledger article, are “anything but lazy,” The Lazy Susan is Mae’s take on the Thanksgiving leftover sandwich, only their sandwich swaps in thin-sliced savory bread pudding for the stuffing and a cranberry mustard relish for the traditional cranberry sauce.

Zooming out from just sandwiches for a moment, Mae’s also offers an extensive array of pastries and salads. Kauff and Price, a professional baker, aim to make as many of their breads, pastries, dressings and other items in house as possible.

Mae’s has high-rating, glowing reviews on Yelp

A scan of the dozens of Yelp reviews for Mae’s, such as one by Victoria H., of Atlanta, Georgia, gives a good idea of how Mae’s rose to the top of the list for Massachusetts.

“My husband and I decided to do a last minute trip to New England and we found this little sandwich shop,” she said in her review. “We got the Mae Day and holy cow what a treat!”

The sandwich, according to the Mae’s menu, includes romesco, roasted veggies, feta, sliced cucumber and arugula on Mae’s focaccia bread.

“We’re are not vegans but totally devoured it!” Victoria H. said. “When we returned to Atlanta my husband asked me what I wanted for my birthday dinner and I said Mae’s! Go to this place even if out of the way!”

Mae’s is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. every day but Tuesday. Visit Maesmarshfield.com for more.
