Thirty-eight people suffered injuries, six seriously, during a United Airlines flight bound for Washington D.C. on Friday morning, Nigerian officials announced in an update over the weekend.
United Airlines flight 613 was forced to return to Lagos, Nigeria, after experiencing an “unexpected movement” that officials initially said resulted in four passengers and two flight attendants being sent to the hospital for examination.
The flight was operated by a Boeing 787 and carried 245 passengers, eight flight attendants, and three pilots.
The flight landed in Lagos at 3:22 a.m., The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria posted in an update on X.
“It landed safely in Lagos and four passengers and two flight attendants were seen at a hospital for minor injuries and have been released. We are working with aviation authorities in the U.S. and Nigeria to understand the cause,” United said in a statement to USA TODAY.

27 more passengers and 5 more crew members also hurt on United flight
In its update on X, Nigerian airport authorities reported an additional 27 passengers and five crew members suffered minor injuries during the incident.
Those passengers were given first aid before being released “immediately.”
The four passengers and two flight attendants who suffered serious injuries were stabilized at area medical facilities before being taken to Duchess Hospital in Ikeja, the airport’s authorities said.

In a separate post on X, the airport authority wrote the medical teams were on the ground before the aircraft landed.
Social media posts show food and beverages strewn about the cabin on the plane.
