BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) –It’s one of the rarest and most exciting birthdays you can have: New Year’s Day.
Mercy Hospital Southwest proudly welcomed the first baby of 2025 in Kern County.
Meet Octavius Malachi Aguilar, born to parents Veronica and Adam Aguilar. Octavius was born 10 seconds after midnight on Jan. 1. He weighed 6 lbs., 14 oz. and he’s 20 inches long.
Then, Memorial Hospital proudly welcomed Baby Cuevas, born to parents Yareli and Cristobal, at 2:42 a.m. We don’t have her weight and height, but her parents were nice enough to share the little superstar’s picture.
A total of four New Year’s babies were born at Dignity Health hospitals—two at Mercy Hospital Southwest and two babies born at Memorial Hospital.
Then, Andres and Deyra Martinez welcomed their second child into the world: Little Diana Lucia Martinez.
“We’re feeling ecstatic,” said Andres Martinez. “We’re excited. We feel blessed.”
Diana was born at Adventist Health in Bakersfield at 12:40 a.m. Jan. 1.
“The due date was the 31st,” said Martinez. “So, we knew it was going to be close, but yeah, we didn’t think it would make it to New Year’s.”
Now, these exhausted proud parents of the six pound, 130 ounce little treasure get to celebrate their new year, new you and their new daughter every birthday.
“It feels like a fresh start,” said Martinez. “It feels like a clean slate for her, especially. Starting out off this whole year. Learn and grow.”
New Year’s birthdays are one of the rarest. Only Christmas Day birthdays are more rare, followed by New Year’s Day, Christmas Eve and July 4.
“I say Happy New Year’s to everyone and I hope you all have a happy, happy year,” said Martinez.
