SEEMED TO JUST MARCH AWAY. SO WHERE IS THE LINCOLN DRUM? SO THE LINCOLN DRUM WAS CREATED FOR ABRAHAM LINCOLN FOR HIS CAMPAIGN IN 1860. IT WAS MADE USING A RAIL THAT HE ACTUALLY HAD SPLIT HIMSELF. AND FROM THE WAY IT’S DESCRIBED IN OLD JOURNALS, IT’S ONE OF THE MOST MAGNIFICENT, BEAUTIFUL DRUMS THAT’S EVER COME OUT OF THIS FACTORY. IT HAD THE LIKENESS OF LINCOLN PAINTED RIGHT ON THE DRUM. THE COMPANY SAYS IT WAS USED BY DRUMMERS AT THE WOULD BE PRESIDENTS RALLIES, THEN DONATED TO THE 10TH MASSACHUSETTS ARMY REGIMENT, THEN TO THE UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. FROM THERE, THE COMPANY SAYS, THE TRAIL RUNS COLD AND A DRUM DESIGNED FOR AND PARTIALLY BY HONEST ABE SIMPLY VANISHED. HAS ANYONE EVER COME FORWARD AND SAID, I THINK I KNOW WHERE THIS MIGHT BE? MY FIRST INSTINCT WHEN SOMEBODY HAS AN OLD DRUM IS, IS IT THE LINCOLN DRUM? AND SO FAR IT HASN’T BEEN. WELL, NOBLE AND COOLEY CONTINUES TO THRIVE, MAKING 500 SNARE DRUMS AND 100 DRUM KITS A YEAR. GARROW AND HIS PEERS HOLD OUT HOPE THAT THEY’LL BE ABLE TO GET TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS HISTORIC DISAPPEARANCE. IT WOULD CLOSE A CHAPTER THAT’S BEEN OPEN FOR OVER 100 YEARS NOW. TO BE ABLE TO SEE THE BEAUTIFUL CRAFTSMANSHIP THAT WAS DONE IN CENTURIES PAST AND EQUATE IT TO WHAT WE DO TODAY, WOULD JUST HELP CONNECT OUR HISTORY EVEN FURTHER. Abraham Lincoln owned a drum made in Mass. — but where is it?
Drum was made for the future president’s campaign at Noble and Cooley in Granville, Mass.
Massachusetts is home to the oldest drum company in the United States and one of the oldest in the world. Noble and Cooley in Granville, Mass., has been making drums since 1854, catering to some high-profile clientele. But years ago, one of its famous drums disappeared. General manager Luke Garro hopes Chronicle viewers can help him find it. “Do you have the Lincoln drum?” he asked. Garro said the company crafted a drum for presidential candidate Abraham Lincoln’s campaign in 1860. “It was made using a rail that he actually had split himself,” said Garro. “And from the way it’s described in old journals, it’s one of the most magnificent, beautiful drums that’s ever come out of this factory.”But after being used at Lincoln’s rallies, it was donated and eventually went missing.Watch the story above to see where the trail went cold.
