SHAFTER, Calif. (KGET) — The disaster in Los Angeles is bringing out the best in Californians as they help survivors move forward.
All Seated in a Barn is a horse rescue in Shafter with the mission to save horses from slaughter. Now, they’re saving horses in Los Angeles from starving.
Thousands of Californians have been forced to leave their homes before nature’s silent killer came to their front door leaving hundreds of animals to fend for themselves.
“People were just so concerned with getting the animals out that suddenly it was like, ‘Uh oh, how are we going to feed all these animals?'” said Tahlia Fischer, founder of All Seated in a Barn.
Now, the Shafter organization that saves horses from slaughter is saving them from starving in the midst of L.A.’s most destructive fire. It started with a phone call, and ended with 60 bales of hay, grass and feed, and a road trip.
“The one particular location we were at was bringing in an additional 15 horses,” said Fischer. “So, thank God we were there, and then we went over to the Los Angeles Equestrian Center, where they were expecting a hundred horses that afternoon.”
Fischer is one of the helpers. The founder of All Seated in a Barn is sending five more trailers full of food for dogs, cats, and horses in need after raising $20,000 in two days.
“As long as the donations come in, we’ll just keep taking feed to these communities and helping them as much as we can,” said Fischer.
The organization started in 2018 with a donkey named Kevin. Now, staff care for up to 450 horses at a time at six locations, with five in Texas and one in Shafter.
“We supplement them. We give them the right feed,” said LeAnn Guelke with All Seated in a Barn. “We put weight on them and we give them the best care we possibly can.”
LeAnn Guelker has been caring for the animals with stripes, horns, and hooves, including Cleveland the Clydesdale.
Now, the Shafter location, known as “Donkeyville,” is also opening its stables to lend a “helping hoof.”
“We have a big arena right here behind us with plenty of stalls, and the staff to help anyone who doesn’t have a home for their horse right now,” said Fletcher Dilley with All Seated in a Barn.
The fires destroyed thousands of homes and has taken numerous lives, but Fischer says the fires bring out the best in people.
“It’s, like, such an overwhelming sense of kindness, passion, love and outreach, that it’s almost like breathtaking,” said Fischer. “Like, it makes you just want to continue to help and be involved, because, you know, you don’t see that necessarily from humanity everyday, and we lose sight of that a little bit, of how great people really are, and how much people do really want to help and reach out. They just need the opportunity to do it.”
Tahlia Fischer says All Seated in a Barn is delivering more feed from Wednesday, Jan. 15 through Saturday, Jan. 18, but they can’t do it without donations. To make a donation, visit their website.
