LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The most recent report from the U.S Department of Agriculture ranks Arkansas with the highest prevalence of food insecurity in the nation.
Food insecurity in the Natural State is a daily reality that affects many families during the holidays according to Carol Godwin, a member of Asbury Methodist Church.
“Besides trying to feed yourself you’re trying to feed your guest too” Godwin said.
Feeding family during the holidays costs a lot, but Godwin, along with members at the church are making a difference with a food drive.
“The drive is called Family to Family, and we do that every December in addition to our normal food pantry,” Godwin said.
Godwin says each member of their church takes a box and fills it with different food. This month they were able to give away 157 boxes.
Godwin said it’s been a beautiful experience connecting with the community, as she recalls handing a box to the last man in line.
“He told me he had three months left to live so we prayed together, prayed that his journey home would be peaceful,” Godwin said.
And for the leaders of Asbury Methodist, this what the holiday’s is all about.
“We were just grateful for how it turned out, how people came together and how we were able to serve and give away the boxes that we had prepared,” Susan Ledbetter, senior pastor at Asbury Methodist said.
And thanks to a $10,000 grant from the Pulaski County Hunger Initiative, church leaders said they will continue providing for those in need beyond this month.
