Beloved Speedy the bison passes away at Yellowstone Wildlife Sanctuary | Billings News

RED LODGE, Mont. – The Yellowstone Wildlife Sanctuary is mourning the loss of Speedy, their longest-lived resident bison and beloved ambassador. Speedy passed away peacefully on January 16, 2025, discovered the morning check. She had shown no signs of illness and was eating well, so they believe her passing was peaceful.

Speedy was born on a bison ranch as the smaller of twins. Her mother prioritized the larger calf, leading the ranch family to raise Speedy themselves. In 2005, she was brought to the sanctuary when she became too large for their home. Speedy was set to celebrate her 24th birthday at this year’s Bison Birthday Party in June.

Over the years, Speedy provided visitors a safe, close-up introduction to bison, the U.S. national mammal since 2016. Generations of families visited Speedy, making her a special favorite. Last year, a sculpture of Speedy by Lee Kern of Red Lodge was unveiled in her honor.

BR Walker, Executive Director of the Yellowstone Wildlife Sanctuary, expressed the team’s sorrow. “We mourn the loss of any of our animals,” Walker said. “In the case of an animal who’s been in the community for such a long time, it’s especially difficult to say goodbye.”

Speedy’s life and passing reflect the sanctuary’s mission. “We promise lifelong sanctuary and respectful care through the end of life,” Walker stated. “In Speedy’s case, we’ll provide cremation, and her ashes will help nourish our grounds for the future.”

The sanctuary welcomes gifts in Speedy’s memory to support her final expenses and ongoing wildlife celebrations. Donations can be made through their website or mailed to YWS, P.O. Box 675, Red Lodge, MT 59068.
