UPDATE on Feb 7, 2025 @ 5:18 pm:

BILLINGS, Mont. – The City of Billings Public Works has issued an update on snow removal efforts as significant snowfall continues to impact the area.

Due to the heavy snow today, BPW expects that residential plowing will conclude in Area 1 tonight and will restart in Area 3. The plowing order for this round is set to follow a sequence of 3, 4, 5, 6, 1, and 2.

Plow operators are working diligently to manage snow berms, but with the heavy snowfall, though BPW warns small snowbanks, also called “berms”, blocking the area around driveways, cars, and mailboxes are possible. Operators aim to push snow as close to the curb as possible, though some snowbanks may extend further due to the volume of snow.

Strong winds are forecasted, which means severe drifting is likely. Residents are advised to be prepared for these conditions.

Drivers are encouraged to drive safely, slow down, allow extra time for travel, and increase following distances.

The City of Billings Public Works says they appreciate the community’s patience as crews work to clear the roads.

Billings Public Works updated snowplow plan prioritizes schools and hospitals

BILLINGS, Mont. – The City of Billings Public Works has shared an updated snow plowing plan in preparation for an anticipated snowstorm that could bring between 1 and 9 inches of snow over the weekend and into early next week.

Last month, Billings residents expressed concerns regarding the city’s snow plowing plan, and in response, Public Works sought feedback from residents with a social media poll. The new snowplow plan is a result of that feedback.

Snow plowing concerns arise in Billings' Heights neighborhood, city seeks feedback

Public Works says that the storm is expected to start with rain before transitioning to snow, posing challenges for road maintenance. City crews are ready to focus on arterial and collector roads as soon as the storm begins. If snowfall exceeds 5 inches and continues, residential snow plowing will be activated, starting in Area 2. The city has also addressed concerns about school zones. The plan is to clear arterial and collector streets first, providing critical access to schools and hospitals. Once those are cleared, crews will tackle school zones during nights or weekends to avoid street parking issues.

With over 30 schools in Billings, clearing these areas is a significant task. Using residential plowing crews for school areas could slow down the overall neighborhood clearing process.

Residents are encouraged to move their cars when their area is being plowed to help crews work more efficiently. The city plans to post status updates every morning and evening to assist residents in moving their vehicles in time.

Additionally, Monday is cardboard day for Monday garbage customers. Residents are asked to place cardboard in a separate box to prevent it from being buried under the snow.
