A Boston police officer was hospitalized after being bitten by a dog during a drug bust in Dorchester.

On Saturday, January 18 around 7:15 a.m. officers arrested 26-year-old Edwin German and 33-year-old Alberis Cruz, both of Dorchester, on drug and firearm charges following the execution of a search warrant at 16 Wildwood Street in Dorchester.

Around 6:56 a.m., officers conducting pre-warrant surveillance observed German leaving the residence and driving away. Shortly after, they conducted a traffic stop at the intersection of Theodore Street and Morton Street, informing German of the four search warrants obtained for him and his residence. During the stop, officers learned that multiple individuals were inside the residence, along with a pit bull, which they were told was friendly.

According to Boston police, upon entering the home, one officer was attacked and bitten by the pit bull. The officer fended off the dog and retreated outside, where additional officers rendered aid and applied a tourniquet before Boston EMS arrived.

The injured officer was transported to a local hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Animal Control later responded to safely remove the dog, which had been secured in a room.

German is facing drug trafficking charges.

Cruz is facing gun charges including unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition. Both are expected to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
