YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — Carl Pelini will not return as head football coach at Cardinal Mooney High School next season.
His contract as head coach and athletic director is not being renewed.
The high school released the following statement on Monday:
“As we reflect on the past football season, we are proud of the dedication and hard work
demonstrated by our student-athletes and the strong support from our school community.
After a comprehensive review of our football program, it is time for new leadership to guide
the team toward its next chapter.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Coach Carl Pelini for his contributions to our program.
We appreciate his time, efforts, and leadership throughout his tenure and wish him the best
in his future endeavors.
Looking forward, we are committed to hiring a new head coach who will continue the
development and growth of our football team. Our goal is to find a leader who will promote
excellence, discipline, and teamwork both on and off the field.”
The Cardinals finished the 2024 season with a record of 3-8 with a trip to the postseason.
Under Pelini, the Cardinals never posted a winning record, but made the playoffs in four of the five seasons that he served as head coach.
In five seasons heading up the Cardinals program, Pelini led Mooney to a record of 17-36.
Pelini will remain as athletic director through the end of the school year.
Cardinal Mooney will begin its search for a new head football coach immediately.
