CLEVELAND (WJW) – A beautiful day at Cleveland’s Cultural Gardens quickly turned stressful for a recently engaged couple.
On Nov. 24, Corey Berebitsky and Niki Mack were posing for photos from their engagement shoot with a fall backdrop. Everything was going great, until…
“There was something on my pants,” Berebitsky said. “My fiancé Niki, she reached down to wipe my pants off and we heard the little ‘tink’ sound. Next thing we know we saw the ring in the sewer.”
The ring is a one-of-a-kind creation, which blends precious stones from both of their grandmother’s rings.
“I wanted to have the rings symbolize the meshing of our families,” he said.
They absolutely had to get the ring out, so they called the Cleveland Division of Fire.
“You could see like the diamond of this ring, just sitting there,” Fire Station 30 Lieutenant Jeff Homan said. “But it’s kind of sitting up where we will be able to get it.”
Homan and firefighters Nick Palmer and Zach Lapuh quickly devised a plan to recover the ring using a long metal wire with a hook on the end. It’s something they typically used to unlock car doors.
The couple’s photographer Emily Ruth documented the entire process. Berebitsky said he was very worried the entire time.
“She was much calmer than me, the fire department were extremely helpful in just keeping everyone calm,” he said. “And they showed no panic whatsoever.”
After a short time, the firefighters were able to hook the ring and pull it up from drain in the Italian Garden.
“They were super happy, super appreciative,” Homan said. “You know, and they had a photographer there and they’re like taking pictures of us the whole time while we’re doing it. So it was, it was kind of funny.”
Berebitsky said after the day was saved, they managed to get some great photos, and eventually get the ring resized so it won’t be lost again.
The couple plans to wed in October of 2025.
