There will soon be new eyes in the sky to help solve crime. We’re one step closer to seeing Flock cameras installed in Colerain Township as police work to make arrests in a deadly shooting that happened on a busy street in the middle of the day.The initiative had a new push from neighbors there. After the Popeyes shooting that left two people dead and one person injured last month, many neighbors feel that having these Flock cameras is necessary, especially because police have yet to make an arrest.Colerain Township trustees recently approved a $70,000 budget to get this technology up and running. That would allow the township to purchase about 20 of them.On Tuesday, they approved a contract to move forward with the company Flock Safety. This is an idea trustees have had in the back of their minds for a few years now, and they felt this is the right time to put the cameras into action. They read license plates and send police instant alerts when they identify plates that match those of interest to officers. It’s a tool already in use across the state.”I think the importance of the technology is it just allows us to do our job better, and so it will allow us to effectuate, response and solve crimes and help keep, you know, the, the criminals out of our community,” Colerain Township Administrator Jeff Weckbach said. Neighbors and trustees actually looked at how this technology works in other communities across Greater Cincinnati, including Loveland, West Chester, and Delhi.”Some of our residents and trustees actually reached out to those communities to talk to their police chiefs, to get some direct feedback on, you know, what what were they experiencing? What were some of the examples that they could share tangibly,” Weckbach said. As for what’s next, the township is going to draft a policy and gather public feedback on the best approach for installing these Flock cameras.
