CENTREVILLE, VA, January 20, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ — Marquis Who’s Who, the world’s premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Colonel James Lillard Wilmeth III, U.S. Army (Ret.), with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Colonel Wilmeth celebrates many years’ experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who’s Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
With 27 years of proud service in the U.S. Army, Colonel Wilmeth is distinguished for both his extensive military achievements and his subsequent work as a program manager at the Northrop Grumman Corporation, an aerospace and defense technology company and one of the world’s largest weapons manufacturers. From 1965 to 1992, he held major artillery assignments in Vietnam, South Korea, Germany, and key stateside U.S. Army bases, experience that later served him well in his work in operations research analysis. Highly educated, Colonel Wilmeth is a graduate of the U.S. Army War College and the U.S. Armed Forces Staff College, and he holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Toledo.
Born in Washington, D.C., to James Lillard Wilmeth, Jr., and Kathryn Curran Wilmeth, Colonel Wilmeth was deeply influenced by his grandfather, James L. Wilmeth, Sr., a passionate historian who composed a biographical history of the Wilmeths from the time they left the British Isles in the 1700s. Colonel Wilmeth was particularly inspired by his grandfather’s impact on the lives of the American people as President Woodrow Wilson’s appointed director of the U.S. Treasury Department’s Bureau of Engraving and Printing from 1917 to 1922.
Colonel Wilmeth’s career as an officer with the U.S. Army began in the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) at the University of Dayton in Ohio; he was drawn to the structure and discipline of military life as well as the professional leadership that the military provided. He proudly finished first among his ROTC program cadets between his junior and senior academic years at the major ROTC summer camp, which led to him being selected as the cadet corps leader of the school’s 2,400-plus ROTC cadet corps.
After earning a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Dayton in 1965, Colonel Wilmeth was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, Artillery Officer, and stationed in South Vietnam. He went on to serve from 1965 to 1992, serving as an aide-de-camp for the First Field Force Artillery; in command and staff positions in the Fifth Battalion, 38th Field Artillery, Second U.S. Infantry Division, in South Korea; and in other highly respected roles. The recipient of numerous awards, Colonel Wilmeth was named Top Gunnery Instructor at the U.S. Army Field Artillery School in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, in 1968 and 1969, and he was invited to serve as contributing editor for the U.S Army Field Manual 630 in 1968, where he shared his expertise on “Field Artillery Cannon Gunnery.”
Twice, Colonel Wilmeth was assigned to leadership and key staff positions at the U.S. Army Center for Army Analysis in Bethesda, Maryland. His terminal assignment was as the deputy chief of staff of the U.S. Army Recruiting Command headquarters in Fort Sheridan, Illinois, from 1991 to 1992. He retired as a colonel in September 1992.
Upon returning to civilian life, Colonel Wilmeth served as a research analyst with government contracting companies. From 1998 to 2009, he served Northrop Grumman Corporation as a research analyst and as the program manager for the Joint Analytical Support Program, providing analytical assistance to the U.S. Defense Department’s joint chiefs of staffs in the Pentagon and in major military commands worldwide. He retired for the second and final time in 2009.
Now fully retired, Colonel Wilmeth is grateful for a fulfilling military career and 15 years of marriage to his lovely wife, Virginia Anne, who patiently supported him throughout his early years of service, involving numerous relocations with the family across the globe. He enjoys spending time with his three children, James Lillard Wilmeth IV, Michael Charles Wilmeth, and Jonathan Paul Wilmeth, and his seven grandchildren. He is a supporter of numerous charities, including veterans’ organizations like the Wounded Warrior Project.
