Your local Costco location may be short-staffed or outright closed starting next month, as the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, which represents 13,000 Costco workers nationwide, is threatening a work stoppage to begin in just a matter of days.

Here’s what Costco shoppers in New Jersey need to know and prepare for.

Will Costco workers go on strike?

Costco Teamsters have voted in favor of a strike to begin after the current contract expires on Friday, Jan. 31.

This means Costco workers in New Jersey and throughout the mid-Atlantic region could strike as early as Saturday, Feb. 1.

“Our members have spoken loud and clear: Costco must deliver a fair contract, or they’ll be held accountable,” said Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien in statements included in the press release. “From day one, we’ve told Costco that our members won’t work a day past January 31 without a historic, industry-leading agreement.

“Costco’s greedy executives have less than two weeks to do the right thing.”

The Teamsters union also posted its intentions to strike in a post on social media platform X:

Costco so far hasn’t publicly responded to the strike threat.

If Costco workers do go on strike on Feb. 1, it will impact the string of 21 Costco locations across New Jersey.
