YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – The detective investigating the unsolved 2017 shooting death of a teen on Youngstown’s south side says it appears he tried to defend himself before he was shot multiple times.
Detective Sgt. Chad Zubal, who is heading up the investigation into the July 2017 shooting death of 18-year-old Braylin Bell at his 411 Mistletoe Ave. home where he lived with his mother, said investigators found a gun next to Bell that had a round jammed in the chamber.
Zubal said that makes it look like Bell tried to defend himself when he was accosted by more than one person in his bedroom around 2 a.m. on July 14, 2017 but when he went to fire the gun, it jammed and would not fire.
Bell died the following day at St. Elizabeth Health Center after being treated for his injuries.
Bell was shot in his bedroom and Zubal said detectives do not know how someone got in there. He said he believes some things were taken from the bedroom and he knows why Bell was shot, but he did not want to say that publicly.
He served several search warrants and interviewed several people, including the two who found Bell and called 911. Their interviews checked out and they are not suspects, Zubal said.
Zubal said more than one person was involved but only one weapon was used to shoot Bell.
