TO BE A TIME OF JOY. BUT FOR MANY FAMILIES, FOOD INSECURITY IS MAKING THIS SEASON A BIT HARDER TO ENJOY. NONPROFITS AND FOOD BANKS ON THE NORTH SHORE ARE WORKING OVERTIME TO HELP FAMILIES PUT MEALS ON THE TABLE, WHILE ALSO FINDING LONG TERM SOLUTIONS. NORTH SHORE BUREAU REPORTER SHAWANDA JONES EXPLAINS, AS WE’RE MAKING A DIFFERENCE. SHAWANDA. YEAH, THE HOLIDAYS ARE HERE. BUT FOR SOME FAMILIES IN SLIDELL, THE FOCUS ISN’T ON FINDING GIFTS. IT’S JUST PUTTING FOOD ON THE TABLE. THIS SLIDELL MOM SAYS THE HOLIDAYS WILL BE TIGHT. FOOD ON THE TABLE TAKES PRIORITY OVER GIFTS. YOU HAVE TO GET THE FOOD FIRST. I HAVE A SON AT HOME AND THEY MAY JUST HAVE TO UNDERSTAND. PERHAPS THE BIRTHDAY CHRISTMAS PRESENTS WILL BE A LITTLE LATE THIS YEAR. I CAN’T DO IT ALL AT ONCE. NONPROFITS LIKE CULTIVATING CULTURE ARE STEPPING IN. TEACHING FAMILIES HOW TO GROW THEIR OWN FOOD, EVEN IN SMALL SPACES. I’M TEACHING PEOPLE HERE THAT YOU COULD GARDEN, EVEN IN LITTLE MASON JARS. YOU COULD GARDEN IN BUCKETS, AND YOU COULD PROVIDE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY WITH ACTUAL SUSTENANCE, WITH NUTRITIONAL VALUE FOR IMMEDIATE HELP, CARTER’S CREATED A COMMUNITY FRIDGE STOCKED WITH PREPACKAGED MEALS. HEARTBREAKING THING ABOUT IT IS MOST OF THESE PEOPLE ARE LIKE SINGLE MOMS, YOU KNOW? AND AGAIN, LIKE, EVERYTHING IS SO EXPENSIVE NOW. IT’S UNDERSTANDABLE. IT’S NOT JUST PEOPLE THAT YOU WOULD THINK TO COME TO, YOU KNOW, A FOOD BANK. IT’S NOT JUST THE POOR THAT WE’RE SEEING. IT’S DEFINITELY THE MIDDLE CLASS THAT IS ALSO COMING TO US. SUZANNE RUOTOLO IS THE DIRECTOR OF THE GOOD SAMARITAN MINISTRY IN SLIDELL. THE MINISTRY ALSO SERVES AS A FOOD BANK FOR EMERGENCY NEEDS. THIS FOR SURE HAS BEEN SINCE OUR 32 YEAR HISTORY HAS BEEN THE HIGHEST DEMAND FOR FOOD THAT WE’VE EVER HAD. ROTOLO SAYS THEY’RE FOCUSED ON LONG TERM SOLUTIONS, LIKE CONNECTING FAMILIES WITH NORTH SHORE FOOD BANK, SECOND HARVEST AND SNAP BENEFITS TO ENSURE STABILITY BEYOND THE HOLIDAYS.
