As former Bears coach Matt Eberflus sets up his new staff as Cowboys defensive coordinator, he is taking two assistants with him. The Cowboys announced Wednesday that they hired linebackers coach Dave Borgonzi and safeties coach Andre Curtis to those same positions under Eberflus.
Both were part of Eberflus’ staff all three seasons with the Bears, and Borgonzi came over with him from the Colts.
The Bears were the worst defense in the NFL in Eberflus’ first season as they tore down their roster to begin the rebuild, then they improved to 20th in points allowed in 2023 and 13th this season. Eberflus, however, went 14-32 as head coach and was fired in November.
He interviewed with the Bengals and Falcons this offseason, losing out on both jobs, then was hired by new Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer on Tuesday. Eberflus was the Cowboys’ linebackers coach and passing-game coordinator from 2011 to ’17 before the Colts hired him as defensive coordinator and he went on to the Bears.
New Bears coach Ben Johnson hasn’t finalized his coaching staff for next season, but as of Wednesday still had tight ends coach Jim Dray and defensive line coach Travis Smith under contract from Eberflus’ staff.
