Danny Kedwell has landed a new role in football management.

Kedwell had only joined Isthmian Premier Folkestone Invicta’s coaching staff last month, having left his position as Ashford boss.

Now, the 41-year-old and No.2 Dean Beckwith have taken over at AFC Croydon Athletic as they replace ex-Gillingham interim head coach Keith Millen.

They took their first training session at the club co-owned by former Crystal Palace and Manchester United winger Wilfried Zaha and rapper Stormzy last week before Saturday’s 1-0 victory against promotion-chasing Margate.

“I’m buzzing with the boys after having one training session with them on Thursday to meet them,” said Kedwell, speaking to AFC Croydon’s YouTube channel.

“All I’d said to them is, if you work hard, the results will come. I think 1-0 flatters them. It should have been a lot more.

“I don’t think they had a shot in the second half and we have had four or five so that’s the only disappointment I’ve got. But the way they conducted themselves, the work-rate and we got to the second balls was excellent.

“Obviously, I played against Croydon when I was at Ashford.

“On a 3G, they’re a very good footballing team and we couldn’t get near them [drawing 1-1 in early December]. But can you do it on a pitch that doesn’t suit you and do the ugly side of the game?

“They did that and were superb.”

Top scorer Brandon Pierrick got his 19th goal this season early on before Gate had goalkeeper Tom Wray sent off for a challenge on ex-Margate winger Kadell Daniel in the second half.

Former Gillingham, AFC Wimbledon and Ebbsfleet striker Kedwell added: “I gave them as little information as I could.

“Sometimes, you can give them too much information, which can make it very hard in their first game. I just gave them the basics of how to win a game and they did that superbly on Saturday.

“As we go along through the weeks, we want to finish this season on a high and build for next year.

“Every single one of them that came on put the effort in. It wasn’t really anything to do with us – me and Dean.

“We gave them the basics, that’s all we did, and they did the rest.”

AFC Croydon Athletic, due at promotion-chasing Burgess Hill tonight, will travel to Littlehampton this weekend.

Kedwell will then face a reunion with Ashford on Saturday, March 1, at the Mayfield Stadium.
