An old school annex could soon be turned into a four-bedroom house.
The building in School Lane, off Willington Street, Maidstone, was once part of Shepway County Infants School, which closed in 1961.
It is now owned by Maidstone council and was originally let by them on a long lease to the British Red Cross, who used it between 1984 and 2021 as a training facility for nurses and first-aiders, using the outbuildings that come with property to store medical equipment.
However, in 2021 the Red Cross vacated the building and marketed the lease.
But they received no interest and in October 2022, the council agreed to buy back the lease.
Currently, the council is permitting Maidstone Amateur Boxing Club to use the building, while the club looks for a permanent home.
But the council wants to now convert the single-storey ragstone property into a house by building three bedrooms in the loft space and inserting dormer windows. A fourth bedroom will be provided on the ground floor.
The former school building has its own large parking area, which will be fitted with an EV charging point, and two outbuildings will remain.
The property has Mote Park to its rear boundary.
The main school building has already been converted into a privately owned home
Maidstone council has cross-party ambitions to build 1,000 affordable housing units, in order to ease the financial pressure of placing those made homeless in expensive bed-and-breakfast accommodation.
Since the target was first floated by the leader of the previous Conservative administration, David Burton, in September 2021, the council has acquired 94 properties so far with another 180 currently in the pipeline.
