SUGARLOAF TWP., Pa. (WBRE/WYOU) Details have been released on a homicide in Sugarloaf Township where police say a man killed another man over a girl.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, on January 21 around 5:20 p.m., a man, later identified as John Rabbitz Jr., called 911 saying he was shot multiple times at his house on Merry L. Drive.

Rabbitz Jr. told 911 that someone knocked on his door, he answered and was immediately shot multiple times — including twice in the chest — before the suspect ran away.

Police arrived on the scene and asked Rabbitz Jr. if he knew anyone who wanted to hurt him and he responded “Hunter Snyder…over a girl,” as stated in the affidavit. Police said Rabbitz Jr. became unconscious and he was pronounced dead on the scene by the Luzerne County Coroner.

Through further investigation, detectives obtained text messages between Snyder and a woman Rabbitz Jr. was dating. The woman said she dated Snyder for one month in October 2024 and ended the relationship, according to court documents. In the texts between the two, police say Snyder continuously asked the woman to get back together.

Authorities say the woman and Rabbitz Jr. discussed Snyder’s behavior and the two bought a camera system for surveillance purposes at her home in Sunbury. The affidavit reports there are videos of Snyder going to the woman’s house multiple times “unannounced and uninvited.”

Nearby surveillance video around Rabbitz Jr.’s home shows Sndyer’s car in the vicinity of the shooting, police say.

A spokesperson for the Pennsylvania State Police confirmed Snyder was a trooper until May 2023 assigned with Troop F for a “brief amount of time.”

Snyder has been charged with homicide. He remains in the Luzerne County Correctional Facility.
