(WYTV) — For this week’s Hometown Hero, we head to East Liverpool where a local community activist was honored for the work she’s done for the city.
Betsy Miller passed away in 2022 but her memory will live on at the Museum of Ceramics, a place where she volunteered so much of her time.
The Museum of Ceramics sits in the heart of East Liverpool.
“She loved East Liverpool and all that it stood for so she wanted to preserve it, bring back the history of what it was about and what it was founded on. I think that’s kind of what her legacy is,” said her son Mark Miller.
Betsy was part of the group called The Lady Slippers, a group of women dedicated to the museum. Her sons, Mark and Mike Miller say she was a leader.
“A lot of people had ideas but she was the person that would actually go out and be bold and bring those things to fruition and work with everybody to make those things happen,” Mark said.
While preserving the history of East Liverpool was important to her, she wanted the children to learn from that history.
“She really wanted the kids in the area to see some of the history from East Liverpool — how the pottery industry — which has unfortunately declined a little bit — for the kids to see what the pottery industry was like back in its hay day,” said Mike Miller.
Even though she’s passed, her legacy will live on and this past weekend, she was honored at the museum.
“She was a driving force behind a lot of the fundraising and it sounds like she had a big influence on a lot of the people and a lot of the things you see at the museum,” said Mike Miller.
