York County is mourning the line-of-duty death of West York Police Officer Andrew Duarte Feb. 22, 2025.

Officer Duarte was killed during a hostage situation in the Intensive Care Unit of UPMC Memorial Hospital, while two other officers, from Northern York County Regional Police and Springettsbury Township Police, were wounded, along with hospital staffers. York County District Attorney Tim Barker identified the killer as Diogenes Archangel Ortiz of York, who according to court records was 50.

The county has mourned a number of law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty over the last century:

  • Private Dean Zeigler of the Pennsylvania Motor Police, the predecessor of the state police, killed Oct. 11, 1942.

  • Officer David Tome of the Northern York County Regional Police Department, killed Oct. 21, 2008.

The York City Police Department recently dedicated a memorial outside its King Street station honoring the two fallen city officers, Officer Henry Schaad who died after being hit by a bullet while riding in an armored vehicle during York’s 1969 race riots, and Officer Alex Sable, who died after suffering cardiac arrest during SWAT training.
