YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — The temperature dropped below freezing on the first day of 2025 and has been there ever since. How does this compare to other arctic blasts?
The temperature officially dropped below freezing around 6 p.m. on Jan. 1 at the Youngstown/Warren Regional Airport. It is still below freezing at the time of this report, which means that the temperature has been below freezing for seven days and 17 hours.
That sounds like a lot — until you compare it to the longest streaks in recorded history.
Here are the top 5:
Year | Duration |
1. 1977 | 39 days, 13 hours (Jan. 1 – Feb. 9) |
2. 1978 | 30 days, 0 hours (Jan. 26 – Feb. 25) |
3. 1980 | 24 days, 18 hours (Jan. 25 – Feb. 19) |
4. 1966 | 24 days, 18 hours (Jan. 13 – Feb. 7) |
5. 1985 | 23 days, 17 hours (Jan. 7 – Jan. 31) |
The record for the winters of 1977 and 1978 will likely never be broken — the comparison to our current cold streak certainly minimalizes it. In fact, the 2025 cold streak barely places in the top 100 as of now.
There is a small chance that the temperature could go above freezing early next week, but overall, the temperature is expected to stay below freezing for at least another week. However, even if it does stay below freezing for another week, this would only place 2025 in the top 30 of longest streaks with below-freezing temperatures.
There are also multiple more chances of snow in the forecast. Check out the Youngstown 7-day outlook to find out when it will hit.
