Juvenile thieves targeting homes in Clifton's Gaslight District

Neighbors in Clifton’s Gaslight District may be seeing more police officers on the streets these days.It comes after a string of home break-ins involving young people. Cincinnati police are now asking neighbors there to stay on high alert, asking them to make sure their homes are locked, and no valuables are left in cars.Gaslight District resident Kameron Mogadam says his garage could have been ransacked if not for an eagle-eyed neighbor. When his neighbor was on the way to work, he spotted someone in Mogadam’s backyard lurking around his garage.Mogadam says when he checked security footage, it showed someone checking the windows on the garage, he was able to share that footage with police.This all happened around 4 a.m. on Oct. 29.”At that time, wasn’t locking the garage, figured it was like in our yard. Didn’t think that, you know, inner things should be locked, but we’ve all kind of switched since then,” Mogadam said.Cincinnati police say this isn’t an isolated incident. The department put up a post saying investigators are looking into a string of recent break-ins involving juveniles.Police say they’re getting into homes through unlocked doors and windows, stealing car keys and taking cars. Now, as the investigation continues, they’re adding more patrols to the area.”Hopefully, if they see the police cars driving around more often, that might deter them,” said Lisa Brokamp, a resident of the Gaslight District.A few years ago, her home was hit.”We went to bed, and as normal, the kitchen door was unlocked, which we didn’t realize. And the next morning, I got up to run my dogs at 5 a.m., and my car was not in the driveway,” Brokamp said.Police were able to locate the car and make an arrest.Now, those who’ve been impacted are hoping their neighbors aren’t next.
