Dan Scorer has challenged in-form Kennington to get as close as they can to the play-off places.
Survival remains the priority for Ton but they’re playing well enough to keep pushing up the Southern Counties East Premier Division table.
Scorer’s side impressed in a goalless draw at home to second-placed Fisher on Saturday and would have won it but for a missed penalty at the death.
The performance once again showed they can compete with the leading sides, though, having beaten VCD in their previous league game to go with a draw at Faversham.
Ton, who visit Erith & Belvedere this Saturday (3pm), are 13th in the table, seven points clear of the bottom two and 12 outside the top five with 13 games remaining.
“A lot of people are now saying you must be feeling comfortable or confident that you’re going stay up but until the job’s done and we hit that 40-point mark at least, we’ll keep pushing ourselves,” said manager Scorer, with Ton on 26 points.
“I said to the boys, if you can do that within the next seven or eight games, we could well find ourselves in a very good position where we’re actually not too far off the play-offs.
“So we’re beginning to see that level of ambition again in the squad.
“It’s not just about survival, it’s about seeing how far up the table we can go and there’s a real confidence in the squad that every game we should be feeling confident we can get three points.
“We’ve taken points now against Faversham, VCD and Fisher so it just goes to show what we’re capable of achieving.
“I think Punjab are the only side around the play-offs now that we haven’t taken points off.
“We’ve taken points off Larkfield and Corinthian so we’re looking forward to seeing what the next six weeks brings.
“I’ve said to the boys I really want to be able to look back in six weeks and say it was a real foundation for where we are then.
“I don’t want to look back in six weeks and say we were so close to doing something really positive and then let our standards down and put ourselves back in trouble.
“I know Lydd and Lordswood are not even on 20 points yet but there’s games in hand there and all it takes is a run.
“I do feel both those sides have got the resources to put things right, it’s just about whether they can do that in the next six weeks themselves because obviously it does become tough.”
Scorer was delighted with Kennington’s performance in their goalless draw with high-flying Fisher.
They would have had three points on another afternoon.
“Once again we’ve shown our levels and what we’re capable of doing,” said the manager.
“To be honest, I think everyone felt a little disappointed to only come away with a point in a game that we battled superbly well in.
“It was another complete 90-minute performance.
“We missed a penalty in the 87th minute, so that was gutting because that would have been deserved.
“In my opinion we deserved three points so to come away from a game like that feeling disappointed I think shows how far we’ve come.”
