MOSCOW, Idaho – The defense team for Bryan Kohberger is bringing on a new attorney, Bicka Barlow, who specializes in forensic DNA. This development comes as the case against Kohberger, accused of a quadruple murder, is set to go to trial later this summer.
The defense has raised concerns about the way Kohberger’s DNA was obtained. During a closed court hearing in January, the transcript outlined the timeline of when Kohberger was identified as a suspect.
Kohberger had been stopped by Moscow and Pullman police before the murders. Investigators say these traffic stops were not initially part of their investigation. They only learned of Kohberger’s name on Dec. 19. By then, Kohberger had already been stopped in Indiana on his way home to Pennsylvania.
There was speculation that these traffic stops were part of surveillance efforts, but investigators disputed this claim. The transcript supports the police’s statement at the time.
Investigators also discussed other male DNA found at the crime scene, including on a handrail and gloves outside the King Road home. They decided not to pursue this additional DNA because they had already identified Kohberger as their suspect.
A witness noted that processing the additional DNA could erase the profile in their system from the knife sheath, which they believe belongs to Kohberger.
The case continues to unfold as the trial approaches, with the new addition to the defense team potentially impacting the proceedings.
