Eagle-eyed Maricopans spotted a little something new on John Wayne Parkway this week.

A sign for La Michoacana The Ice Cream Spot AZ appeared this week above the former K’Bella Salon and Day Spa at 20800 N. John Wayne Parkway, Suite 116, at the Maricopa Fiesta.

“The contractor is still working on the inside, so we don’t have an opening date yet,” Andre Gutierrez, who owns the Casa Grande-based Mexican sweets shop with his wife, Jessica, told InMaricopa today from the sister ice cream parlor in Tucson’s Colonia Del Valle neighborhood.

The family, immigrants from the coastal state of Michoacán, due west of Mexico City, opened the first Ice Cream Spot in 2021 at 1664 E. Florence Blvd., Suite 2 in Casa Grande.

Two years later came a second location on Oracle Road in Tucson, then a third at Craycroft Road and 22nd Street, where Gutierrez was working this afternoon. Maricopa will be the family business’s fourth venture.

As for the menu, Gutierrez said, “it’s the same as Casa Grande.”

Think of everything from refreshing aguas frescas and paletas to filling snacks like duros, mini pancakes and their newest offering, ramen elote (a spicy, cheesy ramen cup nestled inside a nacho volcano).

The recipes have been passed down from Mexico over 40 years, the owners said.

Last year, a different business called La Michoacana Cristeros, owned by Candido Rogel Sanchez of Chandler, submitted pre-application paperwork to the city to establish a similar Mexican snacks and ice cream shop in the city. The project narrative did not specify a location.

There has long been a legal battle over the La Michoacana trade name, used by countless unrelated businesses across the U.S. and Mexico.
